The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ), among the largest affiliates within the national ACLU structure, seeks a dynamic leader to serve as its next Executive Director. A leading voice for civil liberties in New Jersey, the ACLU-NJ advances the cause of civil liberties and civil rights through a combination of legal and legislative advocacy, public education and organizing strategies. The ACLU-NJ is a champion of issues that are at the forefront of our national debate including equal justice, First Amendment freedoms, voting rights, reproductive rights, due process of law, and equal civil rights for people of all ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations. This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished and visionary leader to further advance the profile and impact of one of the premier civil liberties organizations in the region.
The ACLU-NJ seeks an enthusiastic advocate who will continue to inspire and guide the organization and will play a leading role in the civil liberties and civil rights movement in the state. The new Executive Director will be taking the helm of a strong and stable organization with an agenda of cutting edge advocacy and promoting the growth of activism among younger populations. The successful candidate must be an exceptional leader with a deep commitment to civil liberties and civil rights. She or he must have the ability to operate comfortably in a grassroots organization and in a non-partisan manner at the highest levels of the city and state’s leadership, while being willing to challenge the status quo.
The Executive Director must have a working knowledge of civil liberties issues and policies and be an effective manager who is adept at balancing internal management with external impact and visibility. The individual must be an outstanding communicator who is able to convey effectively the mission and activities of the ACLU-NJ to a variety of constituencies. The Executive Director will work with the Board and senior staff to lead fundraising initiatives for the affiliate through the cultivation of existing and new major donors. The next Executive Director must build upon the organization’s recent successes by continuing to strengthen the legislative advocacy programs while committing to the ongoing growth of geographically diverse membership, legal services, public education, and grassroots organizing. The successful candidate will have a record of success in a leadership position in the government, not-for-profit or private sectors; and a track record of achievement in advocacy. A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is preferred.
