Communications Internships
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey seeks a talented Communications Intern to perform both editorial and administrative work for academic credit under the supervision of the ACLU-NJ Communications Specialist.
The internship will provide opportunities to hone skills in nonprofit communications, including writing, editing, coordinating publications, participating in new media, and creating multimedia projects.
The intern will perform the following tasks
- Helping communications specialist coordinate newsletters, reports and online communications
- Assisting with writing and editing press releases, op-eds, web content, blog posts, articles and other documents fundamental to the organization's communications strategy
- Helping maintain and refine press lists, working with members of the media
- Playing a role in updating the ACLU-NJ's online media regularly
- Conducting research related to the work of the ACLU-NJ
- Taking photographs of ACLU-related people, places and events, which occasionally requires interns to work during an evening or weekend
- Performing administrative tasks crucial to the operation of the organization, including filing, scheduling, helping maintain a calendar and other needs that arise
- other duties determined by the needs of the Communications Specialist and ACLU-NJ
Applicant Should
- Have exceptional written and oral communication skills
- Ideally be a junior or senior in college, but enterprising sophomores and juniors will be considered as well
- Ideally have professional or volunteer experience as well as interest in any of the following fields: civil rights, nonprofits, communications, journalism, media relations, marketing or other editorial professions
- Be self-motivated, conscientious, professional, receptive to instructions, attentive to detail, and unafraid to ask questions
