Defending the Vote: The NJ Voter Empowerment Act and the Fight Against Federal Rollbacks

June 5, 2025 @ 6:00 pm

Voting rights have been under attack at the federal level over the past few years. A 2013 Supreme Court decision gutted the federal Voting Rights Act, and now a proposed bill in Congress, the so-called “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act”, would disenfranchise millions of voters across the country by demanding proof of citizenship before they can register to vote. Turning this into law would be a logistical nightmare: fewer than half of American adults have a valid passport, and millions can’t easily access their paper birth certificate. This isn’t just red tape–it’s voter suppression.

Join this webinar to learn more about how New Jersey can fight back by protecting and expanding our voting rights, including by passing the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act of New Jersey. Speakers include Nuzhat Chowdhury from NJISJ, Alejandra Sorto from ACLU of New Jersey, and bill sponsor Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson. They will share information on this bill, and how it is a needed first step in protecting our democracy.
