The ACLU-NJ seeks highly motivated students for internship positions throughout the year for work involving a wide range of civil liberties and civil rights issues.

The ACLU-NJ currently offers the following internship opportunities:

Eligibility

Applicant must be a graduate student; an undergraduate student; or have graduated from college within 6 months of beginning the internship. Applicants who are ineligible for an internship are encouraged to apply for our Volunteer Program.

General Information

Fall and winter interns should expect to spend at least 8-10 hours per week during the semester. Summer internships are full-time internships and last between 10-12 weeks. Internships are unpaid. Interns are encouraged to apply for academic credit. Summer legal interns are encouraged to seek funds through public interest fellowships. Arrangements can also be made with the student's law school for work-study stipends.

Although we cannot predict the number of interns we can hire throughout the year, we also have a number of volunteer opportunities available which can involve anything from short, discrete research projects to long-term projects.

Applicants for internships should have an interest in civil liberties and civil rights, excellent writing and communication skills, and the initiative and energy to see projects to completion.

Application Procedures

Applicants are required to submit an Internship Application Form. During the online application process, all applicants will be required to submit a cover letter, resume, and a writing sample. If the candidate is selected for an interview, references and unofficial transcripts may be requested at that time.

The writing sample(s) must be provided in either Adobe Acrobat (PDF) or Microsoft Word format and should be 3-5 pages long. The writing sample must reflect the applicants own abilities, and should not have been edited by another person. Law students applying for our Legal Internship Program should provide a writing sample (5-10 pages) that demonstrates legal research and writing abilities.
