What You Can Do to End Racial Profiling
- Write the Governor demanding external, civilian oversight of the State Police
Many forces are pushing for additional reform to the State Police-particularly civilian complaint investigation and an independent auditor. Only by adding your voice to the call will we succeed. Explain to the Governor that you do not trust the Attorney General to supervise the State Police anymore. You want community policing brought to the next level: community involvement in insuring police accountability. You may write the governor at: Governor James McGreevey, Post Office Box 1, Trenton, NJ 08625.
- Encourage other organizations to join the ACLU in calling for real reform
Are you a member of a union, a religious organization, a human relations commission, a Rotary club, a women's organization, a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender organization, or another group that seeks an end to discrimination? Believe it or not, they are unlikely to join our call for real reform unless they hear how important it is to you. Encourage them to contact us at (973) 642-2084.
- Have you been a victim of racial profiling on the NJ Turnpike? Call (877) 6-PROFILE or (877) 677-6345
The ACLU-NJ has launched a class action lawsuit on behalf of racial minorities targeted for traffic stops on the New Jersey Turnpike. Your experience will prove helpful. You might be added as a plaintiff.
- Are you a person of color and a member of the ACLU?
Represent the ACLU We may add the ACLU and other organizations to the class action lawsuit. To do so, we need our minority members to volunteer to represent the organization. Even if you have not been stopped by the State Police yet, you can participate. You should have a driver's license and a current membership with the ACLU. Write us at ACLU-NJ, P.O. Box 750, Newark, NJ 07101.
- Support the ACLU-the leader in fighting racial profiling!
In June, Black Entertainment's Emerge magazine called the ACLU "one of the most tenacious and aggressive opponents of racial profiling." With lawsuits in eight states and aggressive lobbying in every statehouse, the ACLU needs your support more than ever. While you're clipping that Bust Card, cut out the form next to it. Send us a donation and the names of friends who should be members. We'll see if they are, and, if not, we'll send them a copy of this newsletter with a note.
