The ACLU-NJ's Legal Department represents individuals whose rights have been denied. Most of our clients are ordinary people who have experienced an injustice and have decided to fight back: - An 18 girl who was denied entrance to a "whites only" swimming pool.
- An 8th grader who was suspended for creating a website where fellow students could air their opinions about their school.
- A woman who sought to hold a vigil for her son who had been killed by the police, and who was denied a permit because she could not afford the city's insurance policy requirement.
The ACLU-NJ litigates about 30 cases each year under the guidance of the ACLU-NJ's legal director and staff attorney. The legal department's work is supplemented by a cadre of highly respected pro-bono attorneys who donate their time and talent to the ACLU-NJ. In our Legal Docket you will find details of all of our cases and links to many of the legal documents filed in the cases. If you think you might have a case or an issue that the ACLU-NJ might be interested in, please read How to File a Complaint with the ACLU-NJ.
