On June 27, 2008, the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey filed a lawsuit against the Borough of Hawthorne and some of its officials on behalf of Andrew Gause, a property owner in the Borough, who was cited for violating a Borough ordinance that prohibits the display of political signs more than seven days after an election. Mr. Gause continued to display his sign supporting the candidacy of Ron Paul after the federal presidential primary election held on February 5, 2008. The lawsuit claims that the ordinance violates Mr. Gause's First Amendment right to free speech. On August 6, 2008, the Hawthorne Borough Council unanimously voted to rescind the restrictions on time limits for political signs.
