US District Court/Direct
Claudia Flores, Lenora Lapidus/ACLU Women's Rights Project
The ACLU-NJ represents two women from the Chinese province of Fujian who claim they were mistreated and discriminated against because of their ethnicity and gender while working as waitresses at the King Chef Chinese restaurant in Wayne. Among their complaints is that they were denied base wages, required to pay kickbacks in return for employment, were put up in substandard employer-provided housing and were threatened when they quit -- all in violation of state and federal civil rights and labor laws. The case is pending in the U.S. District Court in New Jersey and in the federal appeals court.
