The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) seeks highly motivated law students for unpaid summer internships. Legal internships are full-time during the summer and last a minimum of ten weeks and during the rest of the year are part time and run the length of the students' school semester or quarter.
Overview
At the ACLU-NJ, law students gain exposure to a broad range of civil liberties and civil rights issues. Students work closely with the Legal Director and Staff Attorney conducting legal research, writing legal memoranda and drafting correspondence to government agencies in response to documented complaints of civil liberties and civil rights violations.
Educational benefits include obtaining hands-on experience in applying constitutional theories and case law to legal problems, and learning how to conduct factual investigation of complaints. Students become familiar with administrative regulations and agency protocols, while developing a practical understanding of constitutional law. Academic credit can be arranged.
Qualifications
Prerequisites include academic standing as a 1st or 2nd year law student, an interest in civil liberties and civil rights, good interpersonal and analytical skills, and the ability to write in a clear and concise manner.
How to Apply
Applicants are required to submit an Internship Application Form. During the online application process, all applicants will be required to submit a cover letter, resume, and a writing sample. If the candidate is selected for an interview, references and unofficial transcripts may be requested at that time.
