Law Fellow – Immigrants’ Rights

The ACLU of New Jersey is seeking to immediately hire an immigrants’ rights law fellow. This is a fully-funded, two-year position and the fellow initially will focus on ongoing detention conditions and federal habeas cases filed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.  

The ACLU-NJ, headquartered in Newark with a full-time staff of 26, works in every corner of our state to defend the principles of civil rights and individual liberties.   • Investigate, develop, and litigate cases, including conducting factual and legal research, interviewing clients and witnesses, preparing memoranda, writing demand letters, drafting pleadings and briefs, conducting discovery, arguing motions, negotiating settlements, and handling appeals.
  • In collaboration with the Policy Department, build and strengthen relationships with coalition partners, allies, and community organizations; devise and implement non-litigation advocacy strategies; and draft and/or review legislative language.
  • Represent the ACLU-NJ in coalition meetings, conferences, and other gatherings.
  • Speak publicly on behalf of the ACLU-NJ, collaborate on traditional and social media communications, and develop public education materials.
  • Provide technical assistance and advice to attorneys and advocates.
  • Recruit and supervise law fellows and legal interns.
  • Keep internal records and provide administrative and organizational support as needed.


  • This position is designed for someone with one to four years of relevant legal experience. Candidates with more experience will also be considered.  Experience with federal litigation preferred.
  • Law degree and admission to one bar required; admission to NJ bar preferred.
  • Excellent legal analysis, research, writing, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Commitment to immigrants’ rights, racial equity, dismantling white supremacy, and thinking critically about how power manifests in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ability, language, immigration status, national origin, and socio-economic circumstances.
  • Knowledge of languages likely to be spoken by clients with limited English proficiency is a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to begin position as soon as possible preferred.
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with people with a wide variety of experiences and to centering the voices of directly impacted community members.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to navigate and resolve conflict in a way that values and respects relationships with colleagues and partners.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively; to keep organized in a fast-paced environment; to manage a busy docket; to meet deadlines; and to devise and adapt litigation strategy. 
  • A positive attitude and the ability to maintain perspective when encountering challenges.
  • Ability to manage a demanding schedule, working beyond 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends when needed.
  • Once the ACLU-NJ physical office reopens (no earlier than January 2021), ability and willingness to travel throughout the state of New Jersey.


The salary will be in accordance with the ACLU of New Jersey salary scale. Attorneys with one year of experience start at $67,000. Excellent benefits for first-year employees currently include 16 days paid time off in addition to 11 office holidays and 12 health care leave days; medical, vision, and dental insurance; life and long-term disability insurance; pre-tax transit benefits; and 401(k) plan with employer match.
