Become and Activist! Volunteer!
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey works to defend and protect the liberties of individuals throughout our state. We achieve our goals through litigation, advocacy on behalf of individuals and groups, and lobbying. In addition, the ACLU-NJ is active in many public education and community organizing projects.
How You Can Learn about Our Volunteer Opportunities
The ACLU-NJ has volunteer needs that range from one time, urgent needs (such as turning out for a rally or protest action) to regular and routine needs, such as working in the office once or twice a week to answer phones or tabling at community events. The best way to learn about our volunteer opportunities is to follow these outlets:
Launched in March 2017, People Power is the ACLU's platform for grassroots action. By mobilizing in defense of our civil liberties, volunteers can build and strengthen local communities that affirm our American values of respect, equality, and solidarity. Visit https://www.peoplepower.org and create a free account to view events and opportunities near you, searchable by zip code. The site also allows you to create your own events. If you share your mobile number, you can receive text messages about urgent needs.
Action Alerts (Email)
Please consider signing up for ACLU-NJ Action Alerts, to receive emails about New Jersey-specific issues and opportunities. You can sign up here. This is a primary way we communicate about emerging volunteer needs.
And, Thank You!
Overall, volunteering with the ACLU-NJ will not only be very beneficial to us, but it can provide you with a practical understanding of constitutional law, a greater awareness of resources that can be used to resolve issues, and allow you to develop communication skills.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.
