On September 24, 2010, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook announced a $100 million gift to Newark Public Schools. The announcement, which captured headlines worldwide, was made on the Oprah Winfrey show. Newark Mayor Cory Booker and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie were also on the show to accept the pledge and to discuss education reform and Newark schools. Christie asked Booker to craft and implement a comprehensive plan for Newark schools.
Booker promised transparency and to include the community in the developing the plan.
Since then, several community organizations have filed requests under the state’s Open Public Records Act, seeking correspondence, emails and other documents related to Facebook pledge. Open records requests were sent to the City of Newark, the state Department of Education and the Newark Public Schools District.
Here are the requests and the responses from each agency.
