Interactive map shows breakdown of nearly 4,000 marriages in first year of marriage equality

NEWARK – In the year since same-sex marriages were first performed in the state of New Jersey, the state has issued nearly 4,000 marriage licenses, according to the New Jersey Department of Health. Today, to mark that anniversary, the ACLU-NJ has released an interactive digital map to show exactly how love has flourished across the Garden State.

The map shows the number of same-sex marriage licenses issued in each county between Oct. 21, 2013, and the end of Sept. 2014. Monmouth County issued the most marriage licenses with about 406, followed by Essex County and Camden County. Total, New Jersey issued roughly 3,763 licenses. The total number does not include licenses of couples who married outside of the state before the ruling.

“The map we’ve released today testifies to the love and justice that has spread across New Jersey since marriage equality took effect,” said ACLU-NJ Executive Director Udi Ofer. “It shows that in all corners of our state, families have enshrined their love in marriage. Nearly 4,000 same-sex couples have taken marriage vows in this state, but without the recognition of marriage equality, that number would have been zero. A generation of young New Jerseyans can feel secure knowing that in their home state, their love is valued and protected by law. I can’t wait to watch these numbers grow as the years go on.”

The ACLU-NJ invites you to take a look at the map to see how many marriage licenses your county issued in the last year.
