Civil Asset ForfeitureTotal Money Seized by Municipality

The map below shows the amount of money seized by state and local law enforcement agencies in each municipality from January through May of 2016.

Overall, law enforcement agencies seized $5,522,016.80 in that period. Newton, in Sussex County, was the municipality with the highest total amount of money seized, due almost entirely to one large seizure of $610,228. Fort Lee in Bergen County had the next highest total. Sussex and Bergen Counties are among the most affluent counties in the state. Law enforcement agencies operate at two extremes to generate revenue through civil asset forfeiture: by seizing small amounts with high frequency in poorer communities and larger amounts in more targeted fashion in wealthier communities.
