In response to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision today that upholds birthright citizenship, Amol Sinha, executive director of the ACLU of New Jersey, issued the following statement:

“Today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling is a victory for immigrant communities that honors our nation’s promise: if you are born in the United States, then you are an American citizen. This decision is a clear rejection of the Trump administration’s attacks on birthright citizenship, and reaffirms that it is the Constitution, not the president, that dictates who is a citizen. As Americans prepare to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this decision is an affirmation of the fundamental rights afforded to every child born in the United States regardless of their parents’ nationality.”
