Making Every Vote Count: New Jersey's 2008 Elections

The ACLU-NJ and League of Women Voters of New Jersey helped New Jersey voters exercise their right to vote through Voter Protection 2008, using phone hotlines, courtroom support, and poll monitors at more than 100 sites to help voters.

We analyzed voters' reports from the polls to examine underlying systemic problems, revealing shortcomings in poll worker training and performance, provisional ballots, voting machine malfunctions, and the need for uniformity and coordination among state and county election offices. When we understand why the same problems recur each election cycle, we can take steps to resolve them.
