Screening of the Librarians

On Monday, October 13 at 7 p.m., join ACLU-NJ, Princeton Public Library, and Labyrinth Books for a special Banned Books Week screening of The Librarians. This screening highlights the ongoing surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community to support the freedom to seek and to express ideas. This screening will include a round of Banned Books trivia. The film will be introduced by Janie Hermann of Princeton Public Library and Alyssa Kopyani of Labyrinth Books. After the screening please join us for a Q&A with ACLU-NJ Executive Director Amol Sinha and New Jersey Library Association 2023 Librarian of the Year Marth Hickson.   About The Librarians: In this new documentary from Oscar-Nominated Documentarian Kim A. Snyder, Librarians unite to combat book banning and to defend First Amendment Rights amid unprecedented censorship in Texas, Florida, and beyond. In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

No thrones. No Crowns. No Kings. Saturday October 18

No Kings Jersey City

Join the ACLU of New Jersey for No Kings Day on October 18 to condemn President Trump’s escalating abuses of power. Since taking office, the Trump administration has sent masked federal agents to arrest people without due process and deport them to torture prisons thousands of miles away, slashed Medicaid for people with disabilities, and attempted to silence students, professors, lawyers, the press, and their political opponents along the way. President Trump and his administration are abusing their power and denying us our fundamental rights in the process, but we won’t back down. Let’s be clear: Power belongs to the people, and the people will hold power to account. Grow our movement and join us on October 18.
