Ahead of Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill’s nomination for the next New Jersey Attorney General, the ACLU of New Jersey today released a list of recommended civil liberties priorities for the incoming cabinet member. These priorities include challenging abuses of power, reforming our criminal legal system, protecting civil rights, and increasing government transparency.
New Jersey deserves an Attorney General with a strong, demonstrated commitment to a fair and equitable state where all residents are defended and protected. The ACLU-NJ encourages the transition team and the Governor-elect to consider this list of priorities when choosing the next Attorney General.
The following statement can be attributed to ACLU-NJ Executive Director Amol Sinha:
“New Jersey’s next Attorney General will have an enormous responsibility to make decisions that impact the lives and well-being of every New Jerseyan. As New Jersey’s top law enforcement officer, they will be charged with upholding the rule of law, and they must be the frontlines of defense against federal abuses of power that harm our state and our communities. From holding police departments accountable, to promoting racial justice and equity, to ensuring that everyone – no matter their identity or immigration status – has access to the constitutional freedoms and rights they are entitled to, the Attorney General will influence every aspect of our state’s legal landscape and New Jerseyans daily lives.
“The ACLU-NJ has defended and expanded the rights of all New Jerseyans for over 65 years, and we will continue to do so throughout Governor-elect Sherrill’s administration. We look forward to collaborating with the next Attorney General to advance policies that further civil liberties and build a more just state for all who call New Jersey home. We hope Governor-elect Sherrill will choose an Attorney General who values justice, safety, and freedom for all.”
