In response to Gov. Sherrill today signing an executive order that limits the use of state property for federal immigration enforcement, ACLU-NJ Executive Director Amol Sinha issued the following statement:

“ICE is out of control, endangering our communities, and must be stopped. New Jersey cannot be complicit as federal agents terrorize our residents and attack our fundamental constitutional freedoms – the time for action and leadership is now. By using her executive power to hold ICE accountable, Gov. Sherrill is doing what every governor across the country should be doing.

“This executive order, grounded in constitutional principles, requires a valid judicial warrant to access non-public areas of state property, ensuring that ICE and CBP cannot conduct civil immigration enforcement on the premises without appropriate oversight. Additionally, it will limit the use of state property as a staging area, processing area, or operations hub for federal civil immigration enforcement.

“We applaud Gov. Sherrill’s meaningful efforts to combat ICE’s lawlessness and abuse through this executive order and look forward to continue working with her administration to ensure everyone who calls our state home truly feels safe to live the life we all deserve. New Jersey must do everything in its power to keep families safe and defend democracy, and that includes immediate passage of legislation protecting our residents from ICE.”
