ACLU-NJ Statement on the Election of Mikie Sherrill as the Next Governor of New Jersey

In response to the election of Mikie Sherrill as the next governor of New Jersey, ACLU-NJ Executive Director Amol Sinha issued the following statement:

“In this moment of deep political division across the country, New Jersey voters showed the nation that our state is ready to push back against authoritarianism. We hope Governor-elect Sherrill will take this election as the clear mandate that it is: the people of New Jersey reject the Trump administration’s attacks on our communities and demand a commitment to defending our democracy, protecting the rule of law, and safeguarding and expanding our rights and liberties.

“At a time when the Trump administration continues to undermine the rights afforded to all Americans, states have a fundamental duty to lead the nation in defending and expanding our rights. With this election, at this crossroads in our nation’s history, Governor-elect Sherrill has the power to instill unprecedented positive change. We hope – that in honoring the will of the people – she will build a more just future.
