The following statement can be attributed to ACLU-NJ Policy Counsel DaWuan Norwood:
“In considering an ordinance that will impose fines and jail sentences on unhoused people sleeping in public spaces, the Summit City Council is perpetuating policies that are ineffective, inhumane, and immoral. Vulnerable people in need should be met with stable and safe housing and shelter options, not time in a jail cell. We urge Summit City Council members to remove the ordinance from consideration and instead pursue policies that are rooted in the care, support, and rehabilitation of unhoused people.”
