Habeas corpus petition seeking release from ICE custody on behalf of two individuals held at the Essex County Correctional Facility based on their medical vulnerabilities to COVID-19.

On Sunday, March 29, 2020, ACLU of New Jersey, ACLU National Speech, Privacy & Technology Project, ACLU National Prison Project, and ACLU National Immigrants’ Rights Project filed a habeas petition on behalf of two individuals detained in ICE custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both petitioners suffered medical conditions that make them vulnerable to significant harm or death if they were to contract COVID-19.

Just prior to a scheduling conference with the court, we were alerted that ICE would release both clients the following day.
