Today, 126 advocacy groups, including the ACLU of New Jersey, sent a letter to Gov. Murphy urging him to sign the immigrant protection bill package into law. Collectively, these pieces of legislation will implement critical protections for immigrant New Jerseyans.
“Over the last year, immigrant communities across the country have been subject to escalating attacks by a federal administration that is working to erode our democracy and our constitutional rights,” the groups wrote. “This is the reality for far too many New Jerseyans, and while you cannot stop ICE enforcement in New Jersey, you can make certain that New Jersey is doing everything in its power to protect and stand with its residents. This moment calls for action and leadership.”
The immigrant protections bill package includes the Safe Communities Act (S5036/A6308), the Privacy Protection Act (S5037/A6309), and S5038/A6310. Together, these pieces of legislation will strengthen trust between communities and law enforcement, create model policies for schools, hospitals, food pantries, and other essential services, and ensure that all New Jerseyans can access state and local government services for which they are eligible with less worry that doing so will lead to detention and deportation.
