Defending democracy requires all of us.
We are living through an era where the very foundations of our democracy are under attack. The second Trump administration has weaponized the full force of the federal government to go after its so-called political enemies. It has militarized our cities. It has gone after judges and arrested lawmakers and civilians who dare to disagree. It has terrorized immigrant communities and targeted trans kids. It has sought to punish every institution that has something to say about justice, equality, and the rule of law.
We’ve seen this before: points in our country’s history when people in power stoke fear, hellbent on pushing the limit of their authority. But we know the truth: the power of the people will always be greater than the people in power.
Yet this fight requires all of us. We won’t sit on the sidelines while families are being torn apart, while books are being banned, while protesters are being criminalized, and while communities are being disappeared. We won’t sit on the sidelines while the Trump administration brutalizes our communities.
Today, in New Jersey, there are hundreds of thousands of people who will take part in rallies, knock on doors, and hold elected leaders accountable, all to build a better future.
Democracy doesn’t defend itself – it relies on the people willing to speak truth to power. It relies on communities who refuse to be silenced. It relies on advocacy organizations, academia, organizers, philanthropists, industry leaders, the media, every institution and everyday people to rise to this moment and invest in a shared vision of a stronger, healthier nation for us all. If our history has taught us anything, it’s that defending democracy requires all of us.
