New Jersey Must Champion Immigrants’ Rights

Act Now

Earlier this year, New Jersey took an important step towards building a more fair and welcoming state for all by passing legislation that expanded language access at state agencies, created more inclusive data practices that account for New Jersey’s diverse communities, and established much-needed safeguards for domestic workers long denied even the most basic of labor protections. These laws reaffirm what we already knew – that immigrants help New Jersey thrive and that welcoming and embracing new immigrant families is a core value of our state.

In the face of federal anti-immigrant policy and hateful rhetoric across the nation, it is vital that New Jersey lawmakers take action to keep families together and help them thrive. We must build on our success by ensuring the safety and well-being of all New Jerseyans, regardless of their immigration status.

Urge our state leaders to champion immigrants’ rights and ensure that New Jersey is a fair and welcoming state for all who call it home.

Thank you for supporting a more fair and welcoming state for ALL. Your support of recently passed legislation expanding language access, creating more inclusive data practices that account for the diverse communities in our state, and establishing safeguards for domestic works, was vital to them becoming law. The changes that will come as a result of these laws will have a meaningful impact on more than two million immigrant New Jerseyans who call this state home, along with their families and communities.

As we begin this new legislative session, I urge you to build on this success by ensuring the safety and well-being of all New Jerseyans, regardless of their immigration status.

As you know, nearly one in four New Jersey residents are immigrants and one in six New Jerseyans are U.S. born residents with at least one immigrant parent. Immigrant New Jerseyans contribute to the economic vitality of our state – paying $32.5 billion in taxes each year and contributing almost $80 billion in spending power – as well as the cultural and social fabric of our communities. Legislation that ensures immigrant community members’ safety and belonging is essential not just because of New Jersey’s large immigrant population, but also because it allows us to live our values.

In the face of federal anti-immigrant policy and hateful rhetoric across the nation, it is vital that New Jersey lawmakers take action to keep families together and help them thrive. There is a growing threat of expanded detention, increased denial of due process rights, and destroying our immigration system. These policies will tear families apart and cause long-term trauma to children and their parents. New Jersey’s response to this impending danger must be to respond with its own vision for our future: laws that protect immigrant New Jerseyans and respect all immigrant residents as full, valued members of our communities.

This moment calls for action and leadership. I urge you to champion immigrants’ rights and ensure that New Jersey is a fair and welcoming state for all who call it home.

Sincerely,
