In response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that eviscerates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, Amol Sinha, executive director of the ACLU of New Jersey, issued the following statement:
“As expected, the Supreme Court has further eroded the Voting Rights Act, leaving voters, particularly voters of color, vulnerable to discrimination and disenfranchisement. As the federal government slashes these essential protections and attempts to further strip voters from access to the ballot through harmful legislation, states must take action to address the impact this ruling will have on voters.
“New Jersey can lead the way in protecting and expanding access to the ballot. We call on New Jersey leaders to immediately pass the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act of New Jersey (S282/A1715) to make voting freer and fairer in the Garden State.”
