ACLU-NJ Responds to the Death of Jose Chajon-Raxon at Delaney Hall

In response to the death of Jose Chajon-Raxon, a community member detained at Delaney Hall, Amol Sinha, executive director at the ACLU of New Jersey, issued the following statement:

“We mourn the loss of Jose Chajon-Raxon, who reportedly died after experiencing a medical emergency while detained at Delaney Hall. He is the third person to have died after being detained at Delaney Hall, and his death is another tragic result of the inhumane conditions at the facility and in detention centers across the country. The tragedy of his death is heightened by the fact that it took ICE nearly a month to finally confirm it, as Mr. Chajon-Raxon was temporarily released to a hospital when he died. ICE recently changed its reporting policies to evade public scrutiny for people whose deaths may be due to medical neglect, but who were not physically in custody at the time of death.

“The Trump administration’s detention and deportation machine continues to terrorize and traumatize communities at an unprecedented level and must be stopped. Our demands are urgent and nonnegotiable: ICE must be held accountable, Delaney Hall must be closed, and immigration detention must end once and for all.”
