In the Courts, ACLU OF New Jersey

Summary

The League of Women Voters of New Jersey, the Latino Action Network, and an individual New Jersey voter, represented by the ACLU of New Jersey and the ACLU Voting Rights Project, have joined this lawsuit as Intervenor-Defendants to prevent the Department of Justice (DOJ) from obtaining New Jersey voters’ personal data.

In September 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”) initiated a campaign to collect the personal information of every registered voter in the country, eventually suing states like New Jersey that declined to voluntarily produce their complete, unredacted voter registration lists.

DOJ’s aim is to build an unprecedented national voter database through novel, error-prone forms of data-matching to identify supposedly ineligible voters and force their removal from the rolls.

The League of Women Voters of New Jersey, Latino Action Network, and an individual New Jersey voter have intervened to protect the voting and privacy rights of New Jersey voters.
